Through reading and listening activities, BE students develop their understanding of the cultural background of the texts they study. A love of English is nurtured through an emphasis on enjoyment and encouragement to read for pleasure.

Mathematics

KS2 Maths allows students to develop their understanding of calculations with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio. At KS2 level, BE students are encouraged to reason mathematically by explaining, justifying and proving their answers and calculations. BE’s unique pre-tests, which cover the KS2 syllabus, allow us to customise students’ learning according to their strengths and weaknesses in order to achieve the best results.

Science

At KS2 level, students develop a breadth of scientific knowledge and an understanding of the nature and methods of science. KS2 Science at BE also introduces pupils to the vocabulary and language of science so that students can confidently communicate their ideas using the proper terms. BE’s unique pre-tests, which cover the KS2 syllabus, allow us to customise students’ learning according to their strengths and weaknesses in order to achieve the best results.

Humanities

KS2 Humanities provides students with the opportunity to become global citizens, allowing them to deepen their interest in and explore their place in the world. Learning mathematical terms also strengthens students’ conceptual understanding by enabling them to explain and reason using words.

Science

KS3 Science lays the foundations for understanding the world through Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students are able to build up a body of key concepts and knowledge, including the methods, processes and uses of science. BE Students are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop an understanding of how science can be used to analyse causes, explain what is occurring, and predict how things will behave.

Humanities

KS3 Humanities puts in place the keystone for GCSE progression with BE offering tuition in all subjects including History, Geography and Religious Studies. The content at this level is strongly linked to future studies and at BE there is a focus on building a confident writing style. Academic writing, through which core analytical skills are demonstrated, is vital to all humanities subjects and heavily emphasised at BE.

Modern Foreign Languages

For students at BE, learning a second foreign language after English provides an opportunity to explore other cultures and deepen their understanding of the world. Students will also learn to express their ideas clearly in writing, following coherent lines of argument.

Mathematics

BE offers tuition in both Maths and Further Maths at A level – popular choices for those looking to study a highly mathematical discipline at university. Tuition at BE enables students to further their understanding of mathematical skills and techniques and use them to solve more difficult, unstructured problems than at GCSE level. While Further Maths explores the topics more deeply, both courses contain elements of pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics.

Biology

A Level Biology can help make way for a variety of careers paths and will introduce students to the greatest challenges in health, genetics, medicine, agriculture, conservation, climate change and the environment. BE tuition will enhance crucial foundational skills built up at GCSE level and supplement students’ school curricula with an extensive study of topics that resonate with modern health and global biological issues.

Chemistry

Chemistry at A Level prepares students to think around problems and to extend their study skills beyond simple recall of information. BE tutors aim to make this an enjoyable and stimulating process by emphasising the relevance of Chemistry to areas such as the environment, society and the economy. Students are encouraged to become numerate, analytical, and practical with good problem solving, presentation and communication skills.

Physics

A Level Physics builds on former knowledge by exploring familiar topics such as the laws of motion, waves and electricity to greater intellectual depth. New subject areas are also introduced which include quantum physics and cosmology. At A Level, not only is the acquisition of knowledge important; greater emphasis is placed on understanding and applying scientific theory to novel contexts. BE’s tuition for this course encourages creative thinking and problem-solving skills which are transferable to any future career path.

Humanities

BE offers a wide variety of humanities subjects at A Level including History, Geography, Religious Studies, Government and Politics, and Classical Studies. These subjects provide students with a nuanced perspective of human behaviour, thoughts and values. The skills learnt through studying humanities at this level – analysis, discursive writing, critical thinking, problem-solving and cultural awareness – will prove advantageous to all future career paths.

Business and Economics

In A Level Business Studies, students learn about the inter-related nature of business using models, theories and techniques to support analyses of contemporary business issues that are relevant to today’s society. In Economics, students are taught to understand and interpret economic information and explain contemporary events and familiar phenomena with relevant economic principles. BE offers tuition to help students develop their ability to analyse problems, interpret data, read critically and make informed decisions.

The focus on scientific inquiry fosters critical and creative thinking about research and design, as well as the identification of assumptions and alternative explanation. Students will investigate real examples of science application and discover the tension and dependencies between science and society.

Mathematics

BE’s team of experienced tutors offer tuition across the standard and higher level IB mathematics courses. The standard level course focuses on introducing important mathematical concepts through the development of mathematical techniques. The higher level course requires students to apply the mathematical knowledge they have acquired to solve realistic problems set in an appropriate context.

English

The skills and knowledge captured in the ELA/literacy standards are designed to prepare students for life outside the classroom. They include critical-thinking skills and the ability to closely read texts in a way that will help them understand and enjoy complex works of literature. Students will learn to use cogent reasoning and evidence-collection skills that are essential for success in college, future careers, and life in general.

Mathematics

Common Core is designed to help students understand math in a way that relates to the real world, rather than how to quickly solve equations on paper. There is a greater level of detail about concepts, thought processes, and approaches. BE offers tuition at the middle school level covering content such as: equations, ratio and proportional relationships, functions, geometry, statistics and probability. The aim of this course is to help students understand how mathematics works as an integrated whole.
